2-Week Summer Pre-Med Program in Greece:
Managing Health Emergencies
in the Land of Hippocrates

Program Description

“Managing Health Emergencies in the Land of Hippocrates” is designed for students interested in gaining practical pre-med experience in the outdoors, healthcare, or a science-based field. Students planning to pursue a medical career will learn skills to prepare for, and respond to, emergencies in a variety of limited resource environments.

This program is an interdisciplinary and integrative science course that explores the provision of medical care when challenges exist with regard to transportation, communication, equipment, facility infrastructure, medication supply lines, and the affordability and availability of skilled healthcare providers.

The course is divided into three modules: 1) Wilderness Medicine; 2) Disaster Preparedness; and 3) Global Health. Students will gain a better understanding of the need for emergency medical care as a way to manage injuries in the wilderness, during manmade and natural disasters, and in low-income countries lacking medical personnel and materials.

There will also be extensive cultural immersion activities and visits to important archaeological sites. Students will be given a program textbook for assigned readings.

Location

This program takes place in Athens and the island of Kos, the birthplace of Hippocrates, the Ancient Greek “Father of Medicine.”
