Empiria Learning

Two-week
“Euripides Summer Theater Academy”
in Epidaurus, Greece

Program Outline

The two-week Euripides Summer Theater Academy will be hosted on a private resort in the seaside village of Epidaurus, near the ancient theater of Epidaurus, which will serve as our primary campus. The resort is located in an olive grove with its own private beach, and our classes will take place outdoors, in the middle of the olive grove. Our coursework and classroom emulates educational practices of antiquity and our instructors hold PhDs from Princeton University.

This course focuses on one specific ancient Greek play (this will be determined when the theater schedule for the ancient Epidaurus summer festival is announced. This way, our course will focus on a particular play, and will culminate with visiting the ancient theater of Epidaurus to watch the Greek National theater group performing that play at the site). We may also be able to see more performances at the ancient theater of Epidaurus, but this is subject to the Epidaurus Festival schedule (published in the Spring of 2024).

Students will read one Greek play and will choose either a dialogue or monologue from the play to present for their final project for completion of the program. Each student will introduce his/her performance with a detailed explanation for choice in passage, delivery, and costume/set design. On the weekends, we will be taking all students for guided visits to the archaeological sites of Ancient Epidaurus and Theater, Mycenae, and Athens. Students will be learning about and seeing historical sites that are frequently mentioned in the Ancient Greek plays, therefore contextualizing these foundational works, and creating a more impactful understanding of the works and their reception.

Upon completion of the Euripides Summer Theater Academy (ESTA), students will have in-depth knowledge and understanding of ancient Greek history and theater, familiarity with the major Ancient Greek playwrights, rudimentary knowledge of the Greek language and conversational fundamentals, and improved skills in literary analysis. ESTA students will have honed acting techniques and experience in directing and costume/set design. They will have developed social skills including teamwork, self-understanding, confidence-building, leadership, character-building, self-discipline, responsibility, and independence.

Students will have the option of sharing a room with another student, or upgrading to a single room (for an extra cost and depending on availability). Students will have access to a private beach, but will only be allowed to swim with a chaperone present.
